I did my 2 mile loop in Quicksilver Park for the first time in 2 weeks.
Violet-green and N. Rough-winged Swallows were seen from the street. The
first of four Warbling Vireos and House Wrens heard near
the cement bridge. First of three Cal. Thrasher were heard singing
near the start of Mine Hill trail. A Coopers Hawk flew into the
woods here. I heard the soft liquid call of a Swainson's Thrush as
I walked up Mine Hill trail. With a bit of patience, my call brought it
out in the open. (Recently I found four other SWTH birding along Old Oak
Glen Ave. and one in Guadalupe Oak Grove Park.)
My first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher was heard in the meadow, and six
more at various locations along the trail. A pair of White-tailed
Kites in the tree tops where they previously nested. Luck helped me
spot a Golden Eagle flying towards the west. The first Ash-
throated Flycatcher was seen here. Calling ATFL or Huttons
Vireo was nearly always within hearing range throughout my walk. The
Guadalupe Trail was birdy with many singing Orange-crowned
Warblers. A Wrentit seen here and more heard. Walking down the
Senador Mines trail I found my first Lazuli Bunting being chased
by a Scrub Jay. Shortly, I found LABU singing perched atop Elderberry and
Coyote Brush. Two Pacific-slope Flycatchers were heard
along the creek past the furnaces. A Wilson's Warbler was calling
from a dense Live Oak here. I walked to the footbridge bridge on the New
Almaden trail where a W. Bluebird pair was seen. A small Valley
Oak near the reader board had calling Nuttalls Woodpecker
nestlings being fed by adult male. The nest cavity is in a broken
snag in the middle of the tree opposite the reader board. Another singing
Lazuli Bunting was perched in a small tree at the trail junction, for a
total of four!! This is the first time I found local LABU. Calling
Huttons Vireo fed a nearby fledgling just a few feet away. A beautiful
King Snake crossed the trail near the iron gate as I left the park. Other
notable birds include Cal. Quail, Common Raven, N. Flicker, Red-tailed
and Red -shouldered Hawks and Steller's Jay.
