It's also too large to be a night heron; I left a couple of pelicans  
in the shot for comparison, but it's still not that easy to tell, but  
it's noticabely larger than the black-crowned. That was the most  
common suggestion; Mike Rogers and a couple of others suggested Great  
Blue Heron, and Mike specifically identified it as a youngster. Given  
the size of it in comparison with the other birds, that's what I'm  
going to accept it as.

FWIW, I wasn't sure whether the list would appreciate my posting  
these photos for help, but the feedback I've been getting shows a  
bunch of you are enjoying the little challenges as well. I appreciate  
the feedback and suggestions -- and we all seem to enjoy the chase of  
reality not being quite as clearcut as Sibley's is...
