All,
Before bumping into Pat Kenny and Roland Kenner on Salt Pond 16 Frank
Vanslager and I made an early morning (6:50 AM) stop at the mouth of Stevens
Creek where there were thousands of shorebirds. Included were
large numbers of MARBLED GODWITS (numbers way up from our last visit there),
large numbers of WILLETT and AMERICAN AVOCET, large numbers of
"peeps," several BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (both alternate and basic plumage
birds), a few LONG-BILLED CURLEW, a couple SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, and a
couple of CASPIAN TERNS (no Whimbrels). Five BROWN PELICANS (one an adult)
flew over on our walk back to the car and a large PEREGRINE FALCON perched on a
power tower in Salt Pond B1 was being very vocal toward a much smaller
PEFA on the same tower nearby. We also only had a maximum count
of two LEAST TERNS on the boardwalk in Salt Pond A2E( way down from ten
days ago).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
