I checked salt pond A16 and the New Chicago Marsh from the levee
separating them this morning. No sign of Black Turnstone (and Pat
and Roland, who I ran into out there) also hadn't seen one. I did
see three WILSON'S PHALAROPEs and one RED-NECKED PHALAROPE at the
third A16 island. There were quite a few WESTERN and (especially)
LEAST SANDPIPERs in the marsh, but mostly not close enough to check
carefully for alternatives. The last pond in the marsh just before
the railroad tracks had a SEMIPALMATED PLOVER and a (presumably
continuing) LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Most of the birds were flushed out
by a PEREGRINE FALCON, which in turn left pursued by a phalanx of
FORSTER'S TERNs; the shorebirds returned a bit farther off, but
I didn't see the Yellowlegs again (except for a GREATER). There
are now quite a few adult DOWITCHERs in the marsh; the ones I
identified were LONG-BILLED, but I didn't carefully check most.
There were a male and female LESSER SCAUP resting on the first
A16 island. (Only the male was actually identified.) Finally, a
BARN OWL was visible in the box.
A quick stop at State and Spreckles turned up a lot more Lease
Sandpipers, a few Western, and 5 GREATER YELLOWLEGS. I saw that
other birders were heading along the unused RR tracks, so perhaps
something of note might still be reported.
