Today, Sunday, January 29, I had the pleasure of introducing a smart
young birder and his mother to Shoreline Lake. Ben Haynes(13) was
the first to spot the female Barrow's Goldeneye he identified by its
head shape and fully yellow bill. Beth Haynes and I also saw the
bird in full sun using spotting scopes. We had the chance to also
see female Common Goldeneye with sloped foreheads and dark bills with
only a yellow tip.
'
There were 8 or more Pied-billed Grebes, 3 or 4 Eared Grebes, and at
least one Horned Grebe with the white cheek of basic plumage.
The rest of our 24 species is listed below. The lowered water level
may have attracted a few more shore birds than usual.
