I started after Bill and Mike -- didn't leave home until about 10:15am.
Dipped on the Red-naped Sapsucker, as well as the Dipper at New Almaden
(though I looked before and after my sapsucker watch and there was plenty of
dipper whitewash) as well as the neighborhood Screech Owl. However, as I got
in my car to leave (also parked by the stop sign), I heard a slight tap. Got
out to explore and found a beautiful RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER. Sapsucker
consolation prize! I did not find any Spotted Sandpipers at Almaden
Reservoir. I had never been to New Almaden before and thought it was
charming -- windmills, clapboard houses, funky bridges and humorous signs.
At the dam-end of the reservoir were 3 COMMON MERGANSERS and 8 COMMON
GOLDENEYE.
After consulting 3 maps, I figured out I could drive by Calero Resevoir to
go to Coyote Creek Golf Course (where I missed the Redstart)-- so did that;
nothing exciting there. Scoped far and wide and found no raptors. Saw WILD
TURKEYS at the stable. WESTERN BLUEBIRDS on Bailey Road -- an inadvisable
place to stop.
Better luck to all birders tomorrow!
Kris

Subject: [SBB] Central county watery places
Folks:
This morning, 1/28/06, I visited some reservoirs and borrow ponds in the
central county. I started at Almaden Reservoir, hoping for the famed
Red-naped Sapsucker, but gave up about ten. Mike Mammoser was still
sticking it out and I hope he had better luck. My WOOD DUCK count at the
reservoir was 31 and Mike's was 29. Mike also picked out a SPOTTED
SANDPIPER along the shoreline. He also found an AMERICAN DIPPER in
Alamitos Creek across from the stop sign that is at the end of Alamitos
Road just before Twin Creeks. I also enjoyed this singing bird later in
the morning. I then drove over to the Ogier Avenue ponds. Along Monterey
Highway in the Coyote Valley, a flock of KILLDEER took off and numbered
about 150 birds, which is a pretty substantial number anywhere in the
county. At the Ogier Avenue ponds I saw four RING-NECKED DUCKS, six COMMON
MERGANSERS, an OSPREY, and about 2000 gulls, but none of the recent
specialties.
