I was at the San Luis Wildlife Area on a viewing platform, and saw a
fairly hefty bird fly out of the marsh away from me so that I did not
see the head, but the rest of the bird was dramatic.
The body was hefty like that of a large duck, but it had a flaired
tail with a broad white terminal band.
The back was unusual in that running the whole length of the center
of the body was a broad coal black band maybe 2-3 inches wide. On
either side of this black band were two cream colored bands, maybe
1-2 inches wide. The bands were sharply edged, looking like someone
had put strips of colored duct tape on the back.
I was so taken by this unusual pattern, and trying to get someone
else to see it, that I really did not look at the wings.
I have looked at a hundred bird pictures, but find noting to match what I saw.
Any suggestions?
