Observed the male and female WOOD DUCKS and COMMON
MERGANSERS at Almaden reservoir for about an hour
around noon under good lighting.
By 3:00pm we had proceeded south to the ponds along
Coyote Creek just north of the model airplane field.
In the second pond north of the field, we observed a
few male and female HOODED MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED
ducks, BUFFLEHEADS, and RUDDY DUCKS. On several
occasions we had pairs of two or three of these
species in the scope at the same time. All views under
excellent lighting. We missed the reported RED HEADS.
The prize of the day was the OSPREY at the ponds.
Several excellent views on snags at medium range. Then
as we were leaving about 4:00pm we saw the OEPREY on a
wooden power pole just above the road (30m) standing
on a huge fish (clutched in right tallons) that was
still alive. We observed for about 10 minutes then
drove by slowly; the bird remained perched with its
prize catch.
