I almost forgot to report this. Yesterday, I got a phone call from
Mary Kenney who was driving east just past the Pacheco Pass summit
where she saw a leucistic buteo soaring with Turkey Vultures. This is
roughly the same area that Lisa Myers has seen and reported a mostly
white Red-tailed Hawk in recent years. Mary is/was a hawk count team
leader for the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory and was only able to
determine that she saw a buteo because the traffic precluded stopping
for a better view. I've gotten only a glimpse of possibly this bird
on a perch in this area and, likewise, was not able to stop to
confirm. It's probably likely that this is a resident bird, although
I don't know if Lisa's and other sightings cover non-wintering seasons.
On another species subject, I live about 2 miles from Charcoal Road,
and I just saw a male Varied Thrush in a madrone that's straight out
back of the house while looking over my computer monitor. A juvenal-
plumaged Red-shouldered Hawk has been keeping the yardbirds on their
toes.
