All,
For those who may have missed Ann Verdi's original post, the Red-naped
Sapsucker is just up the road from the houses at 23505 Alamitos Rd.
These houses are located on the northern edge of Almaden Reservoir which is just
south of New Almaden in Santa Clara County. From the West Valley Frwy (85)
take Almaden Expwy southeast, turn right on Almaden Rd (later becomes Alamitos
Rd). Follow this road to the reservoir (becomes one way for a very short
section just before the dam). We parked at the first pullout on the right
side of the road past the driveway for 23505, if this pullout is being used then
the next best parking is on Hicks Rd 1/8 to 1/4 mile further on. I would
suggest first working the Live Oaks on the edge of the road (lots of
Sapsucker holes in these trees) and then the larger Oaks around the nearest
house. Be very cautious of fast moving traffic on this narrow road and be
sure to check out the numerous Wood Ducks and Spotted Sandpipers on
the edges of the reservoir (lots of other goodies in the reservoir as well
as the creek feeding it).
I've also been questioned as to the legallity of parking at the first
spot that I've recommended; I have decided to interpret the posted
sign(s) to mean that you can't park on the reservoir side of the road. The
area I have suggested allows one to park well off the road and I believe that
safety is the main concern of the law. You will have to decide this issue
for yourself as you will have to pay any tickets
you recieve.
Good luck,
Bob Reiling.

Subject: [SBB] Continuing Red-naped Sapsucker & American Redstart All,At about 9:35 this morning Frank Vanslager and I saw the male RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER in the Live Oaks just in front of the first pullout on the right side of the road after the driveway for the houses at 23505 Alamitos Rd. After we parked in the above spot we were just getting started when Frank heard the soft pecking of the bird in the oaks in front of us. After watching the bird for several minutes the bird flew northeast to a large bare Oak on the hillside (toward the houses) where I was then able to get some fairly good photos. We then dipped on the Bald Eagle at Calero and also dipped on the Ferruginous Hawk at New and Rucker Aves in Gilroy (I was told the bird is usually there in the afternoons). We then also dipped on any rarities on Coyote Creek Golf Course but quickly found the AMERICAN REDSTART in the brush east of the bike trail and 200 to 225 yds north of the Sycamore Rest Stop which is north of the west entrance to the Golf Course.Take care,Bob Reiling
