If anyone wants to see VARIED THRUSHES, I suggest they walk the
Charcoal Road Trail off of Skyline Blvd. This morning I saw about 100
Varied Thrushes along that trail - one small madrone grove had 40 birds
in it alone. I hadn't noticed before, but the coloring of the Varied
Thrush almost matches perfectly the coloring of the madrone trees. I
also found 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS. They were where the rail flattens
out and opens up. I heard 1 drumming and while trying to find it,
stumbled across a male who started calling frequently, almost
continuously, and whacking away, but not drumming. The second bird then
followed me back to the trail, giving me excellent looks along the way.
Never did see the drumming bird. Also feeding in the madrones were
BAND-TAILED PIGEONS, AMERICAN ROBINS, PURPLE FINCHES (very messy
eaters) and CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEES, though I couldn't tell if the
chickadees were actually eating the berries or just gleaning for bugs.
