All,
At about 9:35 this morning Frank Vanslager and I saw the male RED-NAPED
SAPSUCKER in the Live Oaks just in front of the first pullout on the right
side of the road after the driveway for the houses at 23505 Alamitos Rd.
After we parked in the above spot we were just getting started when Frank
heard the soft pecking of the bird in the oaks in front of us. After
watching the bird for several minutes the bird flew northeast to a large bare
Oak on the hillside (toward the houses) where I was then able to get some
fairly good photos. We then dipped on the Bald Eagle at Calero
and also dipped on the Ferruginous Hawk at New and Rucker Aves in
Gilroy (I was told the bird is usually there in the afternoons). We then
also dipped on any rarities on Coyote Creek Golf Course but quickly found
the AMERICAN REDSTART in the brush east of the bike trail and 200 to 225
yds north of the Sycamore Rest Stop which is north of the west entrance to
the Golf Course.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
