Today at Kelley Park in San Jose, Joan Brauch and I found an Empidonax type flycatcher along Coyote Creek. This was north of the garden entrance to the Japanese Friendship Garden between a single picnic table and bench.
There was a flurry of activity and obviously a nearby predator, which turned out to be a Coopers Hawk later seen downstream. Ruby crowned Kinglets were flashing their crowns, Hermit Thrush hopping from branch to branch, C.B. Chickadees and Bewicks Wrens scolding and the flycatcher flying from perch to perch. We agreed the flycatcher had yellow undersides and saw no obvious vest. I noticed faint wingbars and the bill looked very orange from a distance. We didn't notice an eye ring but the bird had a very wide eyed look. A brief side view showed the bird to have a brownish high ragged crest in its excited state. The birds flew off together and the flycatcher wasn't found again.
Also seen were over a hundred Cedar Waxwings flying about and eating berries from Waxleaf Privets. A Sharp shinned Hawk was circling overhead and two White throated Swifts were seen high over the orchard. An adult Peregrine Falcon was perched near the orchard and flew out to the north. Two Fox Sparrows, Hermit Thrush, Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers were seen along the creek trail. A pair of Belted Kingfishers flew upstream just before we left at noon.
