Last night (1/12/2006) at Hidden Villa a N.Saw-whet
Owl put on quite a vocal performance between 6:05-6:20 PM (at which point I
left; who knows how long it went on after that?). It was located somewhere near
the Big House (former Duveneck family residence).
During that same interval, a couple of Western
Screech-Owls vocalized briefly and intermittently from the wooded slope just
above the Hostel. They had been very quiet up 'til now this year.
In windy conditions at Monte Bello's Gate 5 pond
this morning 1/13/2006, a pure flock of 21 Purple Finches visited the
willows at the water's edge. Mostly these days I see this species in tiny
groups (1-4 individuals) associated with robins or sometimes waxwings, so this
struck me as unusual.
A Coyote with a lame right front paw was hunting
voles, and catching some too.
