Today I went back to Quicksilver Co. Park to look for the Common Poorwill I believe I saw on count day. That day something flew up immediately when I played my COPO recording, but it was too dark for a positive id. It was seen at the same location last summer and the shape was right. However, I don't relish the thought of writing up a rare bird report for a bird seen in the dark. I didn't see or hear any COPO this morning at 6:30 am.
My first bird of the year was a Great Horned Owl that flew overhead at mornings light. It was followed by a calling Coopers Hawk. A Hermit Thrush called from the trail and popped back into the brush. I drove to New Almaden after walking my dog and checked to see the Western Screech Owl in a tree hollow on Almaden Rd. I looked for the Merlin on Fortini but saw nothing but Am. Kestrels in the wind and rain. I stopped at the water district and quickly scanned for the Am. Bittern. I was almost blown off my feet from the wind when I decided to head for home.
I'm enjoying the reports for the Calero/Morgan Hill CBC. My own day was uneventful. I covered the township of New Almaden, entrances to Quicksilver at Mockingbird Hill and Webb Canyon and Echo Lake. My best birds were several Hairy Woodpeckers, Townsends Warblers, a Red breasted Sapsucker, Western Screech Owl, Wild Turkeys and Yellow billed Magpies.
Happy New Year!! Janna Pauser
