All,
My Palo Alto Adult School birding group visited Alum Rock Park
yesterday. It was pretty quiet until about 10:00 when activity
increased and conditions warmed. Highlights of the day were the
AMERICAN DIPPER which was visible downstream from the stone bridge on
the topmost parking lot. We also had great looks at a RED-BREASTED
SAPSUCKER, 2 HAIRY WOODPECKERS and no fewer than 10 TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS. As many as 6 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were flashing their red
crown patches and singing loudly by the Youth Center. One CALIFORNIA
THRASHER was heard singing in the chaparral above the top lot. The
most exciting moment of our tour was when a large flock of WILD
TURKEYS, perhaps 15 birds, flew down from the creek trail toward the
stone overpass. It was very impressive to see such large and heavy
birds airborne, but we noticed their gliding flight was entirely
downhill.
