Tonight I wanted to show Almaden-Quicksilver and its Western Screech-Owls to
Shantanu Phukan -- an old birding pal recently relocated to California. We
walked from the McAbee entrance to the Senator Mine, getting there by about
6:15 pm. At 6:25 we had first one, then two COMMON POORWILL calling! I've
read other reports from around northern California recently, but I still was
surprised to hear them so early in the year. We also had one GREAT HORNED
OWL and one WESTERN SCREECH-OWL.
Concerning eBird, I have been enjoying using it quite a lot, but agree with
Bill that it serves a different function from SBB. For instance, for this
visit to Almaden-Quicksilver, my eBird report will include the calls of
those diurnal birds that were going to roost. These are such common
residents at the park and in the habitat, that reporting them would serve
little purpose for readers of this list.
