SBBers,
Sorry for the late report.
On Saturday, 12-09-06 at the Bubb Rd percolation pond area I saw the back of the head of an interesting sparrow very briefly before it disappeared in the brambles on the island. There was also a pair of BUFFLEHEAD with the female which has been there for a couple of weeks. Yesterday, 12-10-06, I refound the sparrow foraging with a few Golden-crowned Sparrows. It was a tan-striped WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. The Bufflehead pair left but the lone female remained.
Also on Saturday foraging on the Kennedy Middle School playing field off Hyannisport in Cupertino was a flock of about 60 Canada Geese. Among the geese was the ALEUTIAN CACKLING GOOSE which I had seen previously at the pond and a CACKLING GOOSE which appeared slightly smaller with a very narrow band of white at the base of the black neck. There were 2 male and 1 female WESTERN BLUEBIRDs on the wires in front of the playing field.
On Sunday around noon I checked to see whether VARIED THRUSH remained in the Baytree Picnic Area at Stevens Creek CP. None were there but I found one along the trail from the BPA to the reservoir. I had seen a flock of 8 to 12 off the Zinfadel Trail 11-18-06. I did not see them in the park or at least the previous 2 years so it's nice to see them back.
Also on Sunday the upper Stevens Creek Reservoir had a pair of WOOD DUCKs. On 11-19-06 there was also a pair with a juvenile male. In the same area on 11-19-06 there was a male AMERICAN WIGEON (the first time I have seen one in the reservoir) and 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERs.
Good birding,
Peggy Don
