All,
This morning (10/11) Frank Vanslager and I searched the south county from
just south of Rucker Ave (north of Gilroy) to just north of Bailey
Ave (north of Morgan Hill) for rare hawks (a couple were recently
reported by Steve Rottenborn in this area). Finally, at about 11 AM, Frank
spotted a light phase FERRUGINOUS HAWK in a field south of Laguna Ave and west
of Santa Teresa/Hale Ave. Although this bird appeared to be an adult to me
it was located only about 10 miles from where Steve saw a light phase juvenile
on Saturday (10/9). After a few minutes the FEHA flew north to the
hills bordering Santa Teresa Ave where a couple RED-TAILED HAWKS were soaring
and was then lost to sight. Other birds seen today included at least
two GOLDEN EAGLES (one first year juvenile and one adult), a couple
RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, a COOPER'S HAWK, a couple NORTHERN
HARRIERS, a poorly lit and unsexed MERLIN, a couple
WHITE-TAILED LITES and several RED-TAILED H AWKS (including one adult with
an unusually large amount of white on the wings and mantle that I
assumed meant that it was partially leucistic).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
