Early this morning, 7 Dec 06, I went to the John Nicholas Trail into Sanborn County Park, off of Black Road. Before light I had a pair of NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS readily responding to my tape about 100 yards down the trail from Black Road.
After dozing in the car until daylight, I walked the trail to Lake Ranch Reservoir. The first quarter mile had 5 WINTER WRENS calling, while VARIED THRUSHES were numerous all along the way. The reservoir was fairly low and was monopolized by AMERICAN COOTS and RING-NECKED DUCKS.
