The AMERICAN BITTERN was seen again late this afternoon (12/7) at the Santa
Clara Valley Water District (SCVWD).
Janna Pauser discovered the bittern first around 4:00 pm on the north side
of the main pond. When I went to check on the bittern, I found it around
4:30 pm on the east side of the Guadalupe River channel. It was standing
right out in the open with neck and beak outstretched looking like it was
basking in the late afternoon sun. When I came back a few minutes later to
check on it again, the bird had disappeared, presumably back into the
reeds.
Trying to catch sight of this bittern seems to be kind of like trying to
see the Calero Reservoir Bald Eagle - "now you see it, now you don't".
Also of interest was a late day sighting of at least 150 Double-crested
Cormorants flying in to their nightly roost in the sycamores at the SCVWD
pond.
