All,
This morning birding conditions at the Gilroy Water Treatment Facility
were a bit better than in recent weeks as Frank Vanslager and I saw a ROSS'S
GOOSE, two SNOW GEESE and at least two CACKLING
GEESE. It was interesting to note that the ROGO preferred open
fields the company of CANADA GEESE (flying with them on several occasions)
while the SNGO preferred ponds and the company of ducks (swimming out into a
pond on a couple different occasions with ducks and ignoring flyover flocks of
CAGO). One of the more interesting observations today was of numerous
WILSON'S SNIPE feeding out in the open like Dowitchers (at one point I had 23
WISN about 150 ft away in one field of view of my binos, more WISN were
nearby). Other notables today included at least two male BLUE-WINGED TEAL
and a large, poorly seen Falcon (most probably a Prairie Falcon
from it's general color and flight). The "merry-go-round" water
treatment tanks behind the plant headquarters had good numbers of MEW GULLS
in them (seemed to be the only gull species in the area).
Take care,
Bob Reiling
