[SBB] hummingbird in Gilroy

All,

Another post that may be of interest to SBB readers - about a large hummingbird at Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy, posted to monterey-bay-birds. Really large U.S. hummingbirds include Plain-capped Starthroat, Blue-throated Hummingbird, and Magnificent Hummingbird (and perhaps Green Violet-ear), all having green crowns except Magnificent, in which the male has a purple crown and is dark below.

I am writing in the hopes that someone can help but . . . given that
I did not get a photograph (good, bad, or indifferent), I'm
doubtful. However . . .

I was with my family at Bonfonte Gardens today. My husband and I
were watching them get on a ride and I saw a hummingbird in the tree
overhead. It was not a hummer I recognized. I live in Boulder Creek
and have tons of Anna's hummers at my kitchen window everyday. I
also see Allen's for sure and possibly Rufous hummingbirds too.

This hummer was BIG. Really big compared to what I'm used to
seeing. While I was fiddling with my camera, my husband got a good
look at the colors of it as it flew in the sun. It had a blue
crown. It was a dark colored hummer but I was below it and it was in
the shade. I took a shot of it but it flew into the leaves. The
ride started then and it flew away. I did not see any other hummers
all day.

So, blue head and BIG compared to an Anna's. Any ideas?

Thanks for any insight. I realize that it might be impossible to say
what it was without a picture and even then . . .

cheers,

-llm.
