All,
Yesterday evening 8/22/06, I biked out to the Stevens Creek mouth and
scoped the shorebirds foraging on the mudflats as the tide fell. At
least 7 RED KNOTS were present, including 4 adults (mostly fading
alternate plumage with some salmon in the underparts, but one was all
gray with worn/faded primaries and dropped tertials) and 3 juveniles
(pale whitish fringes to tertials and coverts). Other birds of possible
interest included 6 immature BROWN PELICANS, 1 WHIMBREL, and at least
one juvenile WILLET among many adults.
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS were still at the nests on the towers in Salt
Pond A2W to the west, but I could not determine whether young were still
in the nests or not.
