I spent about 2 hours in the area around Monte
Bello OSP's Gate 5 this morning 8/22/2006, arriving about 6:45 (just before the
sun appeared over Monte Bello Ridge.)
A patient wait beside the pond turned up an
immature Green Heron (a species I last saw here about 2 years
ago) and an adult Sora rail following a juvenile as it circumnavigated the pond
margin.
A flock of about 20 swifts descended on the pond at
about 8AM to do some dive-drinking on the wing. Two of them were Vaux's and the
rest White-throated - the stiff-looking wings of the latter made funny, creaking
noises as they made tight turns between passes. A single Northern Rough-winged
Swallow with them was a first for me at the pond.
There was one female/immature Lazuli Bunting still
hanging around. And some interesting little flycatchers just a bit too far away
for a firm ID.
On my way home yesterday 8/21 I stopped in
very briefly as well and found a juvenile Western Kingbird sitting on
the wires a few yards from Gate 5 (another "first" for the
location.)
