[SBB] New Chicago Marsh area

All,

This morning Frank Vanslager and I first checked out the pond at State and
Spreckles in Alviso where the STILT SANDPIPER (resting on an island) was one
of only a few Sandpipers present. We then circumnavigated New Chicago Marsh,
clockwise, starting on the railroad tracks at the Environmental Education
Center entrance road, to the southern edge of Salt Pond A16 and back along the
entrance road to the RR tracks. Birding was fairly slow, however, we did
count 22 SNOWY PLOVERS on the northern edge of the impoundment located north of
the Alviso Marina and west of the RR tracks leading into Alviso. There were
still plenty of Gnats on the edge of the pond A16 and several "peeps" (mostly
LESA) on the dike feeding on them but there was, of course, no Buff-breasted
Sandpiper. Other birds seen included a single unidentified Phalarope in
A16, five BROWN PELICANS (including four adults with several AMERICAN WHITE
PELICANS on the southeastern most island in A16), three to four BLACK-BELLIED
PLOVERS (marsh near the center), a WESTERN FLYCATCHER (wild garden near the
center), a very pale AUDUBON'S WARBLER (in a tree along the canal), an adult
PEREGRINE FALCON in a power tower along the EEC entrance road, and at least
three LESSER YELLOWLEGS (at widely separate areas in the marsh).

Take care,
Bob Reiling
