I did a 2 mile loop in Quicksilver Co. Park this afternoon. My first good bird was a CHIPPING SPARROW found on the New Almaden trail off the Senador trail. I stopped and pished after seeing two PURPLE FINCH fly off. Out popped the CHSP which perched low in a small oak tree while I took notes. This was a short way uphill from the start of the New Almaden trail past the first wooden footbridge.
I heard a HAIRY WOODPECKER calling and saw an adult COOPERS HAWK return to its perch after an unsuccessful hunt. Four GOLDEN CROWNED SPARROWS were in the Coyote brush along the Senador trail near the New Almaden trail on the way out. I checked for the CHSP a second time and again pished it out. This time it sat on the trail about 15' from me where I got even better looks. It was somewhere between breeding and non breeding plumage with a broad rufous crown, bright white supercillium and a dark eye line. It's throat and 2 wing bars were not as white and crisp as a breeding bird. Beak and legs were pink, mantle and undersides were a pale gray. Darker gray tail was long and notched. This time several Purple Finch were heard singing in the area. Also seen were 3 WRENTITS, 1 W.TANAGER and 3 SPOTTED TOWHEES.
