I found the Solitary Sandpiper this morning at 11:30 in the little mudflat
just left of where the paved road behind the Water Board buildings turns to
dirt and rises to the top of the levee. It was near a Greater Yellowlegs,
which was convenient for making comparisons. The mudflat has tules at its
northern border, and there were half a dozen egrets in the puddle and Nutmeg
Mannikins in the tules. The sandpiper was not very active, in fact most of
the time it was sitting down in the mud and hard to find.
Just before that, Janna Pauser found us a Wilson's Snipe a bit further
south, on the western edge of the creek, viewable from the levee (but you
have to climb over a gate to walk south on the levee). At that spot we also
saw 2 Spotted Sandpipers along with many Killdeer. The snipe wasn't active
either - in fact, I thought it was a rock at the water's edge until it
moved.
