I saw the Solitary Sandpiper around 3:15 today. I
turned left off of Almaden (coming from the north off
of 87) on Via Monte and parked in the parking lot that
had visitor places (bear slightly right when you
enter) -- Santa Clara Water District. I walked to the
south end of the perc. pond (to my right, for those
of us geographically challenged in Santa Clara County,
where south seems like west, etc.) and up the hill to
the river.
Immediatley in front of me was the Sandpiper (total
luck), which fortunately did not see me or flush. I
certainly did not need a scope. I watched it and 2
Killdeer for 10 minutes until I decided to move on.
Though I backed up slowly, the bird flushed, calling,
and flew left/north up the river. I looked for it in a
couple of places, but finally continued my walk around
the lake. I assume it moves up and down the river.
There was also a man training his laborador retriever
to retrieve in the ponds; the sign says no dogs but
employees walking by said they did not know it was
against the rules. He had a loud whistle so birding
among whistles and splashes was less than idyllic.
