[SBB] south county birding

Shao Cheng and I birded around Calero and Chesbro Reservoirs this afternoon. Red-winged Blackbirds were making a racket packed into a coast live oak near the horse stables. Several flocks of Wild Turkey's seen along the road and more under a big Valley Oak. A dead Barn Owl swinging from fishing line in a tree was a gruesome sight seen from the end of the levee. A few Gadwall, dozens of Canada Geese and Mallards, a Belted Kingfisher, two Caspian Terns, Forster Terns, and 2 Great Blue Herons were also seen at the reservoir. Those odd looking Guinea Fowl were running up and down the trail right past us!!

We stopped at Chesbro Reservoir from (Old Oak Glen Rd.) which appeared quiet until we walked out on the mud flats. A pair of Wood Ducks swam past, the male's plumage quite colorful now. Over a dozen W. Sandpipers along the shore and a single Wilson's Snipe trying to hide in sparse vegetation. Two Spotted Sandpipers, 3 Great Blue Heron, 2 Yellowlegs, a Green Heron, a dozen Black-necked Stilts and more Gadwall were seen here. A Belted Kingfisher perched for nice looks in Shao's scope. A W. Bluebird was perched on a snag in the field. We stopped along Santa Teresa on the way home and saw W. Meadowlarks, 2 No. Harriers hunting along Richmond Rd., Am. Kestrel, Red tailed and Red shouldered Hawks and 1 White-tailed Kite.
