[SBB] Stevens Creek CP

SBBers,

This morning, 09/03/05, I birded the area around the Cooley Picnic Area and the Creek Trail. I parked in the Canyon Picnic Area. Two BELTED KINGFISHERs flew nosily overhead. As I walked across the bridge from Stevens Canyon Rd toward the Cooley Picnic Area I noticed a flycatcher at the top of a bare snag. It was a fresh-plumaged OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER. A NORTHERN FLICKER and NUTTALL'S WOODPECKER flew into view and behind me a small flock of TOWNSEND'S WARBLERs (10) gleaned the branches. Several ACORN WOODPECKERs and a HAIRY WOODPECKER pecked in an adjacent tree.

In a creekside tree in the Cooley Picnic Area was a PACIFIC-SLOPED FLYCATCHER and a WESTERN TANAGER. As I walked along the Creek Trail I saw a YELLOW WARBLER, 3 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERs, PACIFIC-SLOPED FLYCATCHER, WILSON'S WARBLERs (4), 3 WESTERN TANAGERs, HAIRY WOODPECKER and HUTTON'S VIREO. A CASSIN'S VIREO was heard only. At the creek a juvenile COOPER'S HAWK flew up onto a low branch from the bank.

Back at the Canyon Picnic Area there were 2 more HUTTON'S VIREOs and a couple of AMERICAN CROWs calling loudly.

Good birding,
Peggy Don
