[SBB] 3 Sep 05

On Saturday, 3 Sep 05, I started out at CCFS birding for migrants in the
riparian corridor. What I found included 47 YELLOW WARBLERS, 5 WILSON'S
WARBLERS, 5 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, 12 WESTERN
FLYCATCHERS, 4 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 8 WARBLING VIREOS, 7 WESTERN TANAGERS,
and a HOUSE WREN. Two low-flying VAUX'S SWIFTS were over the banding trailer
with the BARN SWALLOWS, which included a couple VIOLET-GREEN and 1 TREE.
Raptors in the area included a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, a WHITE-TAILED KITE, and
a COOPER'S HAWK, which was being chased by a small falcon that I failed to
identify.

I then found Mike Rogers along the north end of the riparian corridor and we
went to check the waterbird pond. There was little activity on the pond
itself, though we had the male ORANGE BISHOP in the usual spot. A single
CEDAR WAXWING flew by and we had a CLIFF SWALLOW and possibly a couple
VIOLET-GREENS in with the BARN SWALLOWS over the pond.

The banding board showed that a HERMIT WARBLER had been banded on the 14 of
AUG.

I then stopped at the EEC, where the WILLOW FLYCATCHER was still about. The
levee out front of the building had a couple BROWN PELICANS loafing with the
WHITES. At least 6 LESSER YELLOWLEGS were in New Chicago Marsh, but there
was no sign of Ruff or Stilt Sandpiper.

I walked around the old landfill at the Sunnyvale sewage ponds, where the
fennel patch contained an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER (gray-headed) and 5 COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS. The Lockheed Pond had 3 LESSER YELLOWLEGS. Both PIED-BILLED
GREBE and AMERICAN COOT had precocial young in the water channel that
borders the old landfill.
