[SBB] Blue Grosbeak, Willow Flycatchers etc.

All,

This morning 9/3/05, I started out by spending just over two hours along the east side of the Guadalupe River between Montague Expressway and Trimble Road. Despite the great looking riparian habitat, the riparian corridor itself was pretty dead except for the area by the water tank north of Trimble Road. As is often the case, there were more migrants in the ornamental plantings of the nearby office park than in the corridor itself (with about half the Yellow Warblers and Western Tanagers coming from the eucalyptus trees just north of the above-mentioend water tank). Birds found along this stretch included 1 immature GREEN HERON, 3 WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 2 WARBLING VIREOS, 11 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS, 1 WILSON'S WARBLER, 16 WESTERN TANAGERS, 1 to 2 BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, and an early LINCOLN'S SPARROW. CALIFORNIA TOWHEES were still feeding young and another pair was feeding a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD. Walking back along the dike, I heard a BLUE GROSBEAK. After a l!
ittle scanning, I picked out the hatching-year bird in the overflow channel below (just south of the concrete building with black glass windows, about 1/3 of the way to Trimble).

Next I headed to CCFS, where I started out along the northern part of the corridor up by the northernmost sewage pond. Here I found 2 more WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 3 WESTERN FLYCATCHERS, 4 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 WESTERN TANAGERS, and VAUX'S SWIFT. Mike Mammoser joined me and we headed to the waterbird pond, where I picked out the male ORANGE BISHOP, another WILLOW FLYCATCHER, a single CEDAR WAXWING heading south, and another VAUX'S SWIFT. A quick stop at the eucalyptus by the trailer on my way out added 2 more WILLOW FLYCATCHERS, 6+ WESTERN FLYCATCHERS, 7 YELLOW WARBLERS, and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. A single NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW was over the gate when I left.

New Chicago Marsh had fewer shorebirds than on Wednesday and the only reward I got for hiking the railroad tracks all the way to the main line were the 2 SNOWY PLOVERS in the northwest corner of the marsh. I found only 5 LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the marsh today. Passerines of note included a single TREE SWALLOW and a YELLOW WARBLER.
