All,
At about noon today, in a flock of 20-30 AMERICAN PIPITS on the north side
of the hill located west of the Sunnyvale Water Treatment Facility parking lot,
Pat Kenny, Roland Kenner, Frank Vanslager and I had an unusually white
bellied, heavy black streaked AMPI. Despite the skittishness of the AMPI flock
and the high noon time traffic we were ultimately able to determine that the
bird had prominent white wing bars and seemed to have a lighter colored leg.
A small amount of buff was located on the lower flanks of the bird. Upper
body coloring was very similar to that of the normally marked AMPI and we were
unable to note any obvious difference in mantle streaking. This bird is
easily located within the flock but it's and the flocks movements made studying
it very difficult. The bird seemed to be losing a feather on it's left wing
(a tertial?). It seems possible that this is a nonbreeding bird of the Asian
subspecies of the AMPI?
Take care,
Bob Reiling
