Hi All,
At 7:45 this morning 10/20/2005 I stopped off briefly at the little pond at Monte Bello's Gate 5. Wilson's Snipe have arrived there as elsewhere in the county. There were 3 in evidence this morning, along with the Virginia Rail and a Sora. A threesome of Pine Siskins flew out of the willow tops at the pond also.
Mammals were busy too. Twice while standing quietly I was approached very closely by distracted buck deer who were vigorously following females around, almost touching them with lowered and extended snouts. The females were warier and kept their distance. On the way back to the car I was pleased to see a Bobcat before it caught sight of me, and I was able to watch it stretch and luxuriate in the first rays of the sun, pounce at a vole etc. over about 10 minutes until it caught on to my presence and slunk off to cover.
