South Bay Birders,
This morning (6 Nov.) I birded the east side of Coyote Creek between
Montague Expwy. and Highway 237 in Milpitas. The area was very birdy, with
hundreds of Yellow-rumped Warblers and the common sparrows. The most
unusual bird was an Oak Titmouse along the creek at the end of Technology
Drive, not far above Hwy. 237; though common in the Diablo Range foothills
not far to the east, this species is not expected along lower Coyote Creek.
Highlights between Tasman Drive and Hwy. 237 were single Merlin, House Wren,
Varied Thrush, Orange-crowned Warbler, Hermit Warbler, and Western Tanager,
7 Townsend's Warblers, 2 Yellow Warblers, and 2 White-throated Sparrows.
Highlights between Montague Expwy. and Tasman were single White-breasted
Nuthatch, Winter Wren, and Western Tanager, 7 more Townsend's Warblers, and
2 Spotted Towhees.
On Friday (4 Nov.) at Lake Cunningham in San Jose, I saw a banded Blue-gray
Gnatcatcher in the riparian habitat along the loop road near the sandy pit
(volleyball courts?) on the northwest side of the lake. Unless someone is
banding in the vicinity, this is likely the one banded recently at CCFS.
Good birding,
Steve Rottenborn
