On today's (Nov 5) SCVAS field trip to Mt. Madonna, four of us turned
back earlier than the rest of the group. On our way back down the
Ridge Trail between the Tie Camp and Blackhawk Trails, we first heard
and then saw a Pileated Woodpecker. Harold Fukuma first identified
the call we were hearing. We found the bird high up in a madrone tree
eating the berries. The bird moved around a bit and was never
completely in the open. We were so excited at seeing the bird and our
view was partially obscured, so we did not determine the sex of the
bird. We did note that the bird looked like a miniature pterodactyl
as it flew west.
Other observers were Harriet Gerson and Karin Bredfeldt.
