California condors look like this: http://tinyurl.com/exqjt
If you saw one in the wild you're lucky...

Hannes, I was away when you posted this and just now catching up, but I'm
the one who saw the California Condor over our home & Long Ridge Open
Space Preserve on the afternoon of 8/13/04.
I can't tell if there were other responses to this, but it seems you ruled
out Turkey Vulture for your sighting. Is that true, and if so, why?
This is not a trick question :-) It's just that on the face of it, your
descriptions including the dihedral wings sounds like Turkey Vulture.
I was fortunate, by the way, to see the Condor ABOVE several Turkey
Vultures on that date, such that the size contrast was significant. Also,
the pale/white of the California Condor is on the LEADING edge of the
wings which was also very easily observed since the birds were obviously
in flight.
Hope this helps!
