Hannes, I was away when you posted this and just now catching up, but I'm the one who saw the California Condor over our home & Long Ridge Open Space Preserve on the afternoon of 8/13/04.
I can't tell if there were other responses to this, but it seems you ruled out Turkey Vulture for your sighting. Is that true, and if so, why?
This is not a trick question :-) It's just that on the face of it, your descriptions including the dihedral wings sounds like Turkey Vulture.
I was fortunate, by the way, to see the Condor ABOVE several Turkey Vultures on that date, such that the size contrast was significant. Also, the pale/white of the California Condor is on the LEADING edge of the wings which was also very easily observed since the birds were obviously in flight.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Georgia
