[SBB] Monte Bello this AM 5/23, Tanager in Los Altos

Hello All,

A short loop at Monte Bello OSP along the White Oak Trail was only mildly productive in the bright sunshine at 9AM today 5/23/2005. Two Lazuli Buntings were singing, as were four Black-throated Gray Warblers, a couple of Warbling Vireos and a Western Wood-pewee. A Pileated Woodpecker was up very high in the little Stevens Creek tributary paralleled by the Stevens Creek Nature Trail - it is mostly oaks up there, and a narrow little strip of woodland at that. The only breeding evidence I encountered was a European Starling delivering food to noisy young up near the top of the trail. I had hoped to find Chipping or Grasshopper Sparrow as this is often a great spot for them, but there was nothing doing today.

For what it's worth, there was a beautiful, solitary Turkey Vulture with wingtips splayed wide soaring overhead during this visit.

At 2:30 PM I was at tiny Shoup Park, off University Ave. in Los Altos, where a Western Tanager sang from a big Live Oak behind the Garden House on and off for a half-hour until I left. There is a nonnative tree with an abundance of columnar orange blooms close by and the neighborhood starlings were clearly delighted with these - I wonder if the tanager is too?
