[SBB] More Red-Crossbills (on Sunday, 5/22)

All,

At the start of Sunday's SCVAS field trip Kirsten Holmquist had 30-40 RED
CROSSBILLS spotted in the pines across Alpine Rd from the Russian Ridge
parking. Later RECR were seen in pines across Skyline Blvd from Alpine Lake and in
a deciduous tree on the northwestern edge of the lake (eating fresh buds?).
Birding was generally fairly slow during the trip but most of the expected
specialties were well seen including LAZULI BUNTING, PURPLE FINCH and
BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER. A CHIPPING SPARROW made a brief appearance at the top of
a tree and was seen by about half of the group on the trip. Hoped for
eruptive species not seen included Red-breasted Nuthatch and Western Tanager :-(
Behind the ranger maintenance facility we had closely interacting male and
female Black-throated gray Warblers. The bills of both birds were full (the
male had a nice fat grub but I'm not sure what was in the females bill, I
assumed food but there were no young birds in evidence and I'm not familiar with
the birds habits). The male BTGW was also signing.

Take care,
Bob Reiling
