[SBB] Sanborn-Skyline County Park

All,

This morning Frank Vanslager and I first checked out the lower portion
Sanborn-Skyline County Park, along Sanborn Road, with very little of interest
being found. We then went to the end of Sanborn Road and birded the park up to
Lake Ranch Reservoir, the northern and eastern portions of the lake as well as
a section of the power line access road to the southeast. Birds of interest
included at least 5 WESTERN TANAGERS (3 males, two females made up of two
pair with the spare male seen some distance away. One of the pair was spotted
copulating at the top of a conifer), BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS,
ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER (heard), WARBLING VIREO (heard),
CASSIN'S VIREO (heard) and HUTTON'S VIREO (heard). Earlier on our to the end of
Sanborn Road we spotted 15 to 20 BAND-TAILED PIGEONS working over a bird feeder
in front of a house. The most interesting thing about this was that as the
birds jockied for position on the feeder they were in a mostly vertical
flight attitude with their tails spread, thus providing the best views I've ever
had of the Band at the end of the tail.

Take care,
Bob Reiling
