All
A bright yellow bird came to one of my ground feeders. It is smaller
than a towhee, about the size or a little bigger than a house finch. It
looked somewhat like a miniature non-breeding western tanager as illustrated in
Sibley's, but the wings are not black with white wingbars. Rather they are
greenish yellow with dark tipped primaries. The tail has a dark stripe down its
center. The light red extends to the top of the head from the beak. The beak
is that of a seedeater but not as blunt as on a house finch. It walks rather
than hops.
I've never seen a bird like this before and I would sure like to know
what I'm looking at. It has apparently been hanging because my wife saw it
several days ago at one of our birdbaths.
