Hi All,
There are some unusual birds at Lake Cunningham this afternoon! As I drove into Lake Cunningham from the south entrance of Tully Road, I noticed a large grebe swimming and diving in the south-eastern 'bay' where the man-made waterfall and wooden bridge are. It turned out to be a CLARK'S GREBE with its red eye encased in white, the black well above the eye.
On the north end of the lake, a large black bird with a very long tail flew low overhead (the tail was the length of the body and head together). The bird rounded the corner to the northernmost island on the lake, where the pelicans hang out. I thought, "It couldn't be!" but then I relocated it on the east side of the island dipping down for sips of water in the shade on the shore. It was a male GREAT-TAILED GRACKLE, and I got very good looks at his long keel-shaped tail as he strutted on the edge of the island.
There were at least 5 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES around the pines and restroom of Parking area A, and this morning on a quick stop to check up on her, I found the WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER on her usual tree in parking area C. She was not there this afternoon, however, probably because of a huge crowd at the picnic area. They were not loud, but a constant stream of people seemed to flow through "her" pines...
I only saw one YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (Myrtle) today, in its full spring colors. There were also 3 CINNAMON TEAL swimming around the heron nesting area.
                                          Take care,
                                                  Kim Blythe
                                                  Santa Clara
