[SBB] Grant Park 03-12-05

All,

My Palo Alto Adult School birding group visited Joseph D. Grant County Park this morning for a beautiful day of birding. The weather was absolutely clear and warm! While we did not log a huge species list, some sightings were noteworthy. Highlights include a male BULLOCK'S ORIOLE in the large redwood near the farmhouse, a HOUSE WREN in the coyote bush below the garden, a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER at the farmhouse, a female COMMON GOLDENEYE, an adult THAYER'S GULL on the lake, and five Swallow species. TREE SWALLOWS were seen in many locations, but the lake had the majority with three NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGS, three VIOLET-GREENs, a BARN, and a CLIFF SWALLOW foraging over water. ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were heard on four occasions during our walk, but none were ever located by sight. A single HERMIT THRUSH called from the creek near the farmhouse bridge.

Singing RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS were heard in various locations and Swallows were seen setting up nests.
