Kim Blythe and I spotted the Wild Turkeys displaying from the parking lot
at Calero C.P. stables. Several male turkeys were butting chests and one
grabbed the other by the head and pulled him around. That's when a horse
intervened and things settled down a bit (honest). A Coopers Hawk flew low
over the blackbirds and Kim spotted some Tri-colored Blackbirds among the
many Red-winged Blackbirds in flight. Cliff, Barn and Tree Swallows were
also seen.
It was difficult to tell if one of two large white birds perched in a tree
at the reservoir was a Cattle Egret without a scope. Three pair of W.
Grebes seen, but no courting displays. A Bufflehead pair and some female
Common Mergansers were other birds of interest.
Our next stop was further south near Chesbro reservoir where we found a
Lesser Yellowlegs, flushed a Wilson's Snipe and saw a pair of Wood Ducks
swim past. Large fish were spawning in the shallow water near shore. Some
species seen here were Am. Wigeon, Osprey, Great Blue Heron, No. Flickers,
Steller's Jays, Downy Woodpeckers, and Hermit Thrush. Orange crowned
Warbler and Nuttalls Woodpecker and Red shouldered Hawk were heard only.
A quick stop at Fortini Rd. produced Say's Phoebe, a stunning perched male
Rufous Hummingbird, singing Cal. Thrasher, Violet Green Swallows,
W.Meadowlarks and Yellow billed Magpies building a nest in a tall palm
tree. I drove out on Schillingsburg Rd. and stopped to check the Golden
Eagles nest on the tower power at McKean Rd. A soaring adult Golden Eagle
landed on a tower and another adult could be seen standing over two eaglets
peeking above the nest. What a wonderful way to end the morning.
