[SBB] Tufted Duck (Salt Pond A2W)

Folks:

This afternoon, 3/2/2005, I stopped by Salt Pond A2W, parking in the Shoreline GC parking lot, to look for the TUFTED DUCK that has been seen in recent months. My efforts were assisted materially by Rich Page and Al Dieckman (?) who had been watching the male in the southeast corner of the salt pond. I walked to the southeast corner along the bike path and found the male resting near the second (further east) catwalk. Later it foraged a bit. I also had three male EURASIAN WIGEON between the two catwalks and further west I had two males and a female. I found only two REDHEAD in the southwest corner, but Rich and Al said they had five on the east side. The present male Tufted Duck has a tuft that in the wind blows back and touches his upper back--pretty impressive. For what it's worth, the sleeping male I watched in A1 on the Palo Alto CBC in December had only a vestigial tuft as far as I could tell. I don't know what is typical for molt in this species.

Bill
