[SBB] Wood Ducks at Oka Ponds in Los Gatos

Hello all -

I was leading my Campbell birding class this morning when we were pleasantly surprised by two male WOOD DUCKS. We had entered the Oka Ponds via Oka Road and walked to our left along the cyclone fence. When we hit Los Gatos Creek we turned left to see what was hanging out around the dead-end section of trail where the water fall is located.

While observing BAND TAILED PIGEONS, MALLARDS, a COOT and a pair of BELTED KINGFISHERS, (just to name a few) we had a pair of male WOOD DUCKS fly into the still section of water before us. They quickly disappeared under cover to preen for several minutes. Both came back out into view and swam up stream. We observed a leg band on one duck.

GREEN HERONS, NORTHERN ROUGH WING SWALLOWS and BLACK PHOEBE'S were everywhere as young are fledging.

We also watched an immature COOPER'S HAWK snag some breakfast from "Snipe Island".
One VAUX's SWIFT did a fly-over while we were at Vasona.
