Spring brings a new crop of downy young birds pacing the sloughs in Palo
Alto Baylands Nature Preserve on San Francisco Bay. Spindly-legged
black-necked stilts fight each other for dominance and sometimes with
American avocets that share the territory. Both species care for their
precocial young between power towers sprouting up from the pickleweed in
the Harriet Mundy Marsh. The avocets hatched and fledged before the stilts
this year, but young stilts are still active:

And I have fresh proof of aliens at Palo Alto Baylands:

(More stilt chicks shaking the water off and getting sideways.)
All comments welcome.
