All,
This morning Frank Vanslager and I checked out Monte Bello OSP from gate
MB05 to the pond southest of the gate and then northeast of the gate to and on
the first half mile or so of the White Oak Trail. At the pond we spotted
Garth Harwood, who just finishing up birding and getting ready to leave, a
singing male LAZULI BUNTING, and a singing first year male PURPLE FINCH. The pond
itself was pretty quite, as expected, but it was nice to know where it is and
how to get there. Later on our way to the White Oak Trail we had a juvenile
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW that was fluttering it's wings and "calling" (no
apparent sound from our view point) from the top of a bush near the trail junction.
At a high point on the White Oak Trail, near a utility pole, we had a
CHIPPING SPARROW singing from the trees just off the trail to the left.
Unfortunately, despite having singing CHSP (maybe only one?) well heard from several
trees along the trail for the next quarter mile or so, we were never able to
spot a CHSP. On our way out the CHSP once again sang from the trees near the
utility pole (still unseen). We did manage to see a nice adult male Purple
Finch, dueling male Lazuli Buntings and a barely seen singing HUTTON'S VIREO.
At one point a flock of 23+ BAND-TAILED PIGEONS flew by overhead and we had
small numbers of CLIFF, VIOLET-GREEN, and BARN SWALLOWS flying low over the
hillside.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
